Individual Psychotherapy

Life is messy. Relationships are challenging; and personal fulfillment seems illusive. Then,

there is a moment when you realize it’s time to talk to someone. When you realize it’s time to talk, we are here to listen, provide insight, and guidance. We can help you make sense of the messiness.

When the time is right to explore what is holding you back from your best life, give us a call.

We see clients in person and virtually. Perhaps you’d prefer to walk a trail and talk or just sit in the sunshine while we explore the challenges of your life and understand the “whys” behind behaviors, reactions, worries, heartbreak, and feelings.

We provide a safe, secure, and confidential space to talk, explore, and start a new conversation.

Couples Therapy

No one ever said, “being in a couple’s relationship is a piece of cake.” Our relationships come with all types of potholes, stressors, and disruption. Relationships experience highs and lows, bumpy roads, and smooth freeways. Two people joining together in a life journey bringing with them backpacks full of old patterns of behaviors, assumptions, goals, expectations. Who would ever think this could be easy?

There are central themes we look at in our couples work which include:

  • Patterns of behaviors that were learned or taught in our homes of origin
  • Assumptions about what marriage and the roles for each partner
  • Communication skills and the use of verbal weapons and empathic understanding
  • Shared meaning
  • Parenting models and skills
  • Emotional violations
  • Family interactions
  • Assessments are used to identify problem areas and goal setting

The health of our couple’s relationship impacts our entire life. Healthy couple’s relationships

positively impact your children, careers, and your physical and mental health. Let’s work

together to improve the overall health of your relationship.

Family Therapy

Families come in all shapes and sizes; and there are many layers of generations and relationships. Often, our expectations regarding family relationships do not meet our expectations resulting in disappointments, arguments, hard feelings, and sometimes estrangements. When families fracture, whether between a mother and daughter or between brothers, it results in pain, sleepless nights, and intrusive daily feelings and emotions. Family therapy is restorative therapy. It is therapy that seeks to bridge the divide, create mutual understanding, and a path forward.

No matter how many individuals are involved in family therapy, we create a safe place for each one to share their story, feelings, and needs. Restoring and starting a “new beginning” and a “new way of being together” is the goal.

Child and Adolescent Therapy

Children and adolescents are welcomed clients at Redwood. In fact, we save Saturday’s just for our kids. The use of play therapy, interactive games, and art therapy are commonplace in our model of working with kids.

Play therapy is a mode of therapy for children and adolescents tailored to their age and level of development. This mode is often non-directive and allows them to tell their stories and share feelings through play and creative experiences. Toys, art, games, and dances engage everyone in self-exploration.

Children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, separation or divorce of parents, struggle with

emotional regulation, or who choose not to talk about feelings often open up through play.

Parent consultations before or after a session are essential aspects when working with children and

adolescents. These consultations inform the therapist of the challenges experienced at home or school

so that the therapist’s work is effective. Often, the parents are invited into the therapy session to learn

how to play and talk in a productive way with their children and adolescents. In turn, the therapist

provides guidance and approaches for the parents to introduce at home. Change and growth does

happen, confidence and self-esteem are strengthened, and each individual is affirmed.

Play therapy is more than a therapeutic approach for children. Play is a necessary aspect of everyone’s

well-being. All ages of clients benefit by engaging in active play. Painting, clay modeling, drawing,

writing, and storytelling are modes of therapy that are used to open up blocked channels of expression,

memories, and feelings. Perhaps it’s time for you to engage in play as a way of understanding your

struggles and finding a new way of living a life worth living.

Reunification Therapy

Reunification Therapy is a form of Family Therapy. The emphasis in the reuniting or

reestablishing a relationship between a child or adolescent and their parent often caused by divorce, separation, abandonment, or abuse.

The primary goal in Reunification Therapy is to provide a safe and secure place for the child and the parent to develop trust and begin a healthy relationship. It emphasizes attachment, promotes healthy communication, and works to heal injuries in the relationship. In this form of therapy, the child sets the pace of the reunification. If the therapist is encouraged to rush the process, the therapy most likely will not be successful. The work is intensive and requires patience on behalf of parents. The mental health of the child or adolescent is always a focus of pacing and timing of

the work.

There are times when the process includes, individual therapy of a child, co-parenting skills training, and communication skills training.

Reunification Therapy can bridge the divide between family members in particular children estranged or alienated from a parent. If you are interested or have been court ordered to engage in this form of therapy, we have experience and expertise in Family Therapy and Reunification Therapy.
